Teaching Science can be hard work. Apart from having to cover a huge amount of content we also have to look for ways to keep students engaged. For as long as I've been teaching many commentators have argued that teaching should seek to balance teacher-led and student-led activities. In 2013 Rita Pierson gave a TED Talk on students needing champions, I’d like to think that we can go on step further and give every student a hero!
Since 2006 I have been teaching secondary Science in the UK. I’m passionate about student progress and believe that the way to get the best out of them is through teaching interesting, high-quality lessons. For many years I have worked with other teachers to help them develop their own practice.
I’m a strong believer that what we do as a profession needs to be based on what the research tells us works best. I have an interest in how metacognition can be used in the classroom and the most effective methods to improve how much students retain from lessons. Dynamic lessons help engage students and improves their overall engagement.
