An Introduction to KS3 Science Curriculum Design

Curriculum design and implementation have been high on the educational research and policy agenda internationally over the past decade.  Curriculum design must consider changing global, social and legislative perspectives to be relevant. In England, the revised education inspection framework has seen an increased focus on curriculum in recent years.  This is the first in a series of videos examining how the KS3 Science curriculum can be redesigned.

Why does our Science curriculum need to be ambitious?

This is a question that has been asked a lot over the years and is possibly one of the more contentious topics within the world of teaching because there are so many different opinions and viewpoints on how to achieve it.  In the world of UK Science, we work towards covering all aspects of science as set out by the national curriculum.  There is however, no specific way or order this needs to be done and that’s before we start to begin thinking about assessment and other aspects of teaching that aim to improve your student's learning experience and progress they make.  This video outlines some of my thoughts about what we can do

Why Do We Use a Spiral Curriculum?

A spiral curriculum is one in which there is an iterative revisiting of topics, subjects or themes throughout the course. A spiral curriculum is not simply the repetition of a topic taught. It requires also the deepening of it, with each successive encounter building on the previous one.  This video outlines some of my thoughts about how a spiral curriculum needs to be considered when designing a curriculum

Using  both substantive & disciplinary knowledge

Before we can think about how we are going to structure the curriculum I want to outline the use of both substantive and disciplinary knowledge and the interplay between them.

Substantive knowledge is the knowledge produced by the academic subject. In science, this involves concepts which form the underpinning structure of the subject.

Here are a few of my thoughts about it
